WRANGLE BROOK COMMUNITY GARDENRULES AND GUIDELINES For MEMBERSHIP
An important goal in community gardening is to work together or next to each other in harmony. Please be courteous in all interactions and work together to resolve any disagreements. It is important to respect your neighbors’ garden beds and the surrounding neighborhood. We appreciate the fact that this land has been made available to us by Berkeley Township. Keeping a “Clean and Green” garden area helps to create an enjoyable place to work for all gardeners and is a delight for the community to see!
All prospective members who wish to acquire a personal garden bed must meet with the Personal Bed Manager (PBM) or their assigned designee before signing the Rules and membership application.
The following are rules we agree to keep when we become members of this garden.
Members should check their bed weekly. If you will be away for more than a week please make arrangements with another gardener or friend to take care of your bed and inform the Personal Bed Manager (PBM). If you have a personal hardship that prevents you from maintaining your bed, contact the PBM.
If member gardeners abandon their beds for any reason they must notify the PBM by email or phone call. Garden beds may not be passed on to friends or family members outside the member’s immediate household and they must complete a membership form.
Your garden bed must be planted, maintained and must be contained within its boundaries. Maintaining means that weeds are kept to a minimum, plants are tended and harvested and dead, diseased, or dying plants, rotting vegetables and debris are removed. If you are letting a plant go to seed in order to collect the seeds, please indicate by placing a bag over the fruit or plant. This will keep those seeds from spreading and will signal the PBM that you are collecting seeds. It is expected that you will spend 3-5 hours per week, on average, caring for your bed during the growing season. Remove pests as needed- notice will be given for severe infestations.
All members are required to complete 4 hours of volunteer time in the garden between May 1 and October 31. There will be a sign off sheet in the old shed with a rotating list of chores that need to be done. Members will be responsible to keep track of hours, and record their activities. There are many activities that count as volunteer hours in order to accommodate those with physical issues.
We encourage year-round gardening whenever possible. Beds should be prepared for planting no later than May 1 and beds should be cleaned up no later than November 1. Tomato cages, if not removed, should be laid down in the bed. Maintenance surveys will be done on a weekly basis. If nothing is planted in the bed by May 1 the bed may be given to someone on the waiting list. You may have access to the garden at any time, using the current lock code. Do not give the code to anyone other than your household members or the person you have indicated as your contact.
Gardeners must be aware of the height of various plants when full grown. There is a 5 foot rule as to the height of plants and structures. Plants or structures that shade or interfere with other gardener’s beds are not permitted. Sunflowers and other tall plants are not permitted. Gardeners shall pick only their own crops unless given permission by another gardener.
Diseased or pest-ridden plants must be removed from the site and dumped out back of the garden in the designated area.
Please keep all areas around the garden bed free from debris, weeds, tools or other objects. Members are responsible for weeding around their bed on all sides as well.
Members who are out of compliance to the rules of WBCG will be notified by the PBM. You are given 48 hours to respond to the text message. If you do not respond in that time frame, WBCG assumes you are not able to care for your bed, and the bed will be reclaimed. If you have ripe vegetables, they will be taken to the food pantry. Accommodations can be made to help an individual, but you MUST contact the PBM to make them aware of the situation.
All tools and equipment belonging to the Garden should be stored in the Garden shed. Hoses should be rolled up and stored after use. Any tools or equipment belonging to the gardener that is left behind are left at the gardener’s risk. WBCG is not responsible for gardener’s personal tools or equipment.
Gardeners will use only organic fertilizers, insecticides and herbicides, following manufacturer’s guidelines and directions and use them in such a way as to not affect other beds. We encourage gardeners to pick pests off plants and dispose of them in soapy water. No genetically modified seeds or plants (GMOs) are permitted. Plants regulated or prohibited by federal or state laws are prohibited in the Garden. If such plants are found the membership will be revoked immediately. All pets must be on a leash if entering the garden space.
No signs or other objects that indicate or endorse political candidates, organizations or parties are permitted.
